Every child is born mentally healthy.
Akamai Kids is a Hawai’i-grown SEL curriculum that helps keiki discover the mental health and resilience already inside them, building well-being before problems take hold, not after.
Mental Health Is Innate
Mental health is our natural capacity for well-being.
We are born with a baseline of physical health, and we are also born with a baseline of mental health and well-being. Akamai Kids helps students recognize the Innate Mental Health inside them, a set of built-in psychological capacities that help us navigate life well.
Just as clouds may temporarily cover the sun without diminishing its light, stressful thinking can obscure these deeper resources, but they are never lost. Our well-being may seem hidden for a while, but it is always there, ready to reappear when our mind becomes more settled and clear.
Keiki are struggling, and coping skills alone are not enough
Across Hawai’i, children face rising anxiety, dysregulation and difficulty focusing, while teachers are asked to do more than ever. Most programs teach children ways to manage a problem. Few show them where their experience actually comes from.
51.2% of students reported feeling anxious. 38.3% reported feeling depressed. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among youth ages 10 to 24.
We teach children how their experience works, from the inside out
Every lesson builds on one idea that changes everything: our experience is not created by our circumstances. It is created by thought.
Thought creates experience. Two children can sit in the same classroom on the same day and live two completely different moments, because each one is feeling their own thinking, not the situation itself. We're living in the feeling of our thinking, not in the feeling of the world. What children learn: you can’t see a thought, but you can always feel one.
Feelings follow thought. Feelings are not a report on the outside world. They reflect the thinking moving through us in the moment, and as that thinking changes, the feeling changes with it. What children learn: feelings are messengers, and they pass.
Well-being is underneath it all. When thinking quiets, children do not have to work to feel okay. The mind returns to its natural well-being on its own, the way the sun is simply there when clouds pass. The skill we teach is knowing where home is and how to find the way back. What children learn: underneath it all, I am okay.
As the mind settles, here is what naturally shows up in children:
Natural Self-Esteem
Peace of Mind
Resilience
Intuition
Instinct
Insight
Common Sense
Compassion
“Gut” Feeling
Wisdom (Na’auao)
Deeper Sense of “Knowing”
Innate Intelligence
Understanding
Conscience
Creativity
Love
Kindness
Curiosity
Inner Calm
Serenity
These are the diamonds we help keiki uncover. This is Innate Mental Health.
Over time, this understanding of Innate mental health helps children navigate life’s challenges with greater clarity and ease because they learn that healthy psychological functioning comes from within, not from external circumstances. They develop into more confident, caring, responsible and emotionally intelligent human beings.
Hawai’i educators and therapists, working upstream
We help young people understand how their experience is created from the inside out, before crisis, not after, so resilience is already in place when hard days come. Meet the team.
Prevention, not just coping
Most programs add something: more strategies, more tools, more worksheets. Akamai Kids points children back to something already within them. When the noise of stressful thinking quiets, what’s left is a child’s natural well-being - already there and waiting.
This approach helps children understand the foundations of healthy psychological functioning before problems become crises, supporting student well-being and healthier school communities.

Nothing about you is broken.
That one idea is at the heart of a movement to change how Hawai’i understands mental health. We are shifting the paradigm from fixing what appears broken to awakening what is already whole, because mental health is not the absence of illness. It is an innate capacity for well-being, alive in every person.
Mission
To ease the pressure of growing up and help every child recognize the innate well-being and ancestral wisdom already alive inside them.
Vision
A world where every child recognizes their inner wisdom and innate mental health, creating more compassionate classrooms, stronger communities, and healthier lives.
